MauerGuide (Berlin Wall Guide)
The Minilofts are located a mere 100 meters from a former border checkpoint, at Chausseestrasse – but twenty years after the fall of the Wall, Berlin visitors can be hard pressed to tell the difference between East and West. Of the 155 kilometers of Wall that once cut off West Berlin, only three kilometers still stand, but there are plenty of fascinating fragments and clues to the past, when you know where to look. MauerGuide (“Wall Guide”), a cunning handheld GPS device, guides you along the former path of the Wall and shows pictures, videos and audio recordings for an in-depth yet independent tour, in English or German. Pick up the guide at the excellent Berlin Wall Memorial, a mere seven minutes’ walk from the Minilofts (don’t neglect to climb the tower, for a glimpse of the ‘Dead Zone’), and trace the Wall’s former path past sites such as Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie, ending at the East Side Gallery, the impressive 1.5 km stretch of mural-adorned Wall.
