The intendant of Hebbel am Ufer, one of the most exciting theatre and musical venues in town, famously has an aversion to "art shit", preferring instead "reality shit" - an attitude that has helped propel his theatre into experimental terrain far removed from the world of traditional drama. This month catch Oedpius Rex, Constanza Macras' newest dance theatre piece, based on the 1926 Cocteau/Stravinsky opera. Macras stays true to Sophocles' original structure, dividing the play into five scenes that form a succession of tableaux vivants, while staging a gorgeous balance of seriousness and lightness, monumentality and fragility.
