Before Badeschiff, only ducks, punks and the very brave could swim in the Spree River. This sensational open-air swimming pool is actually in the river, its heavenly blue a lovely contrast to the Spree's murky green. The award-winning design includes an open-air bar, a sandy beach area, and a concert stage; the "Bathing Ship" morphs into an alfresco nightclub in the evening. Lolling in the water and taking in the unparalleled city view - of the giant "Three Men" statue in the river, the Oberbaumbrücke, and the TV tower - is a quintessential Berlin summer experience, at one of the city's hippest and most original venues. In wintertime the open areas are covered to create saunas. Difficult to find, but it's worth it - just ask a local for directions!
