Berliner Unterwelten

A visit to this fair city we call home at Miniloft is always full of surprises – especially if you scratch beneath the surface. And a more literal application of that will lead you to a world of wonders beneath the streets of Berlin, mainly due to the tours that have been led by Berliner Unterwelten rather consistently over the years. A tour company fixated on the hidden delights of Berlin, Berliner Unterwelten is all about subterranean exploration, peeking in at the fascinating glimpses of Berlin’s past that have been hidden underground.

Berlin is not a city to just hand it’s numerous spaces over to history. In the past few years, the growth of the capital can be found in the bounty of new cultural hotspots, filling gaps left from former times. The St. Agnes Church is the latest in a long line of cultural redevelopment, this time taking a former church and turning it into a multipurpose destination for art, design, writing, performance and more.

Sometimes a coffee is there to serve a purpose and offer you a little caffeinated pick-me-up. And then there are the times where you choose pleasure over purpose. With two locations in Berlin – one in Prenzlauerberg (The Barn Roastery) and one in Miniloft’s district of Mitte – The Barn is a strong contender for Berlin’s best cup of coffee.

Berlin is currently preparing itself for winter, which means long meandering walks are not always top of the list. Berlin is often painted as a city that refuses to go to sleep – particularly for those with a taste for techno. But electronic beats are not the only music on offer, and for anyone looking for a more civilised Sunday evening, the Sonntagskonzerte at Clärchens Ballhaus offers a real Berlin treat.

Auguststrasse, just a blocks away from Miniloft, has crafted a rather salubrious reputation amongst other Berlin streets. With galleries, countless cafés and restaurants, it’s another typically Mitte street filled with things to do. And taking a trip round the renovated Jüdische Mädchenschule allows for a microcosm of Mitte, under one roof.
