Comfort food comes in many forms – but the overarching criteria could be surmised as food that warms your soul as much as it sates any physical hunger. For those moments where such sustenance is the order of the day, head to Cocolo on Gipstraße in Mitte. There, in a relatively small and permanently bustling restaurant, you’ll find your fix.

The selection is similarly compact. Cocolo swaps sprawling menus for a condensed assortment of steaming Japanese ramen ranging from the sublime (Tonkotsu – a creamy pork broth) to the spicy (Tantan Men) to lighter soy based or miso broths. All come adorned with garnishes to complement the simple (and inspired) combination of broth and noodles. Small dishes including sesame spinach and gyoza dumplings can turn a quick stop into something a little longer, washed down with warm sake or a beer. A resulting sense of nourishment, though not explicitly on the Cocolo menu, is always available.
