A decent cup of coffee is a simple thing, yet a tricky business. Berlin has always taken coffee seriously, but in the last few years, there have been plenty of places keen to prove just how seriously they take their cup. Roastery-come-cafes have sprung up rather naturally in Prenzlauer Berg and Kreuzberg, some decidedly more prescriptive than others. The slightly rarer treat is finding a café that sells wonderful coffee, without scrimping on the rather old fashioned concept of being nice to the people wanting to drink it.

Miniloft has found another local answer in Westberlin – the café, not the area – which has beautiful beans (direct from local Berlin roastery Five Elephants) and friendly staff. A very welcome addition for the southern end of Friedrichstrasse, Westberlin is airy in its design, with a good pit stop menu (good cake, juice, snacks) and plenty of magazines, guides and newspapers to fuel you onward. Well designed, well executed – and well, the coffee really is worth it.
