Berlin is a city that – as many people will tell you – is best experienced by bike. The city is relatively flat, spacious and full of sites that can be taken in via two wheels, making Berlin perfect biking fodder. So it’s no surprise that the Garmin Velothon – a mammoth race round Berlin’s centre and southerly regions, has grown to become Europe’s second largest cycle race, with some 13,000 cyclists of various ages and abilities getting on their bike every May.

With a choice of 60km and 120km, participants whizz through completely closed roads and pass major Berlin landmarks like Tempelhof Airport and the Eastside Gallery alongside the major hitters of Potsdamer Platz, Brandenburg Gate and the Victory Tower on the Straße des 17. Juni. Some 250,000 spectators are there to cheer you on – and there’s even a kids race for the younger and budding cyclists out there. You can participate as an amateur or pro, in a team or solo, or if you’re feeling less energetic, watch on from the sidelines at the Straße des 17.Juni, where on the day, there’ll be plenty of stalls, stages and exhibitors to keep you entertained.
