At the risk of jinxing ourselves, we are beginning to feel the first flushes of spring around Miniloft. Which means all of our “stay outdoors for as long as possible” itches are about to be scratched. For those looking to explore the city whilst taking advantage of the (oh-so-slightly) balmier nights, Berlin’s Long Night of the Museums (Lange Nacht der Museen) is a definite highlight.

Late nights are perhaps more often associated with Berlin’s many clubs and bars but the cities cultural institutions (including its operas, theatres, universities and libraries) all get in on the act from time to time. The Long Night of the Museums is a particular favourite of ours, giving you the opportunity to view the best of Berlin’s exhibits under the cover of darkness.

The theme this year – “Destroyed Diversity” – focuses on Berlin pre 1933, giving a glimpse into the cultural melting pot of Berlin’s old Metropolis. Yet all the sites on show are fascinating and worthy of a peek. Be it an eerier than usual wander around the Topography of Terror, seeing the Babylonian Ishtar Gate in the Pergamon Museum at 1am in the morning, or gazing up at the night sky at the Berliner Planetarium, the evening spans the breadth of the city and the breadth of most people’s taste. Tickets are available online or offline in advance and on the day, which kicks off at 6pm on March 16th, 2013. Prices are inclusive of public transport, including the many shuttle buses whizzing around on the evening to and from the epicentre at the Kulturforum, Postdamer Platz.

We’d definitely recommend pre-planning, and all manner of routes and details on the some 352 exhibitions across 74 participating museums are available (in German only) via the Lange Nacht der Museen website. The only limit? Your cultural appetite.
