Berlin is not really wanting on the park front, with a bit of green space for everyone somewhere in the city. Whether it’s the winding streets of Tiergarten, the waterfall that runs through Viktoriapark, the sprawling oasis of the Naturpark Südgelände or the urban playground of Görlitzer Park in Kreuzberg, you’ve pretty much got a park for practically every mood. That said, it’s always good to see that total being added to, rather than diminished – and one of the most recent additions is in a former wilderness strip at Gleisdreieck.

The trains still run above on bridges, with both the U1 and U2 straddling across Gleisdreieck, but down below, an urban planning transformation has fully taken root. Here, you’ll find a mix of impeccably modern landscaping, with something for everyone. There’s lawns for lounging, a skate bowl (one of the largest skating areas in the city in fact), footpaths that will to you from the Südgelände to Potsdamer Platz and a nature discovery area for young minds. Also worth a look when you are there is the Rosenduftgarten – an ongoing intercultural project that continues to be cultivated by the local community.

Protecting the uniqueness of the area has been an important part of the planning process, with local involvement ensuring not all the flora and fauna have been sacrificed to perfectly presented progress. What has resulted is a harmonious area that can be enjoyed by anyone in Berlin – and definitely a great spot to stop off and have a picnic on a sunny day.
