Growing up in a house surrounded by LEGO blocks, the possibilities were endless. We had a local airport for a hospital that served a quiet sleepy village filled with Star Wars characters, in many many games that often included parents alongside instruction manuals. LEGO has always been more than your average toy for all ages, so no surprises that Berlin’s LEGOLAND Discovery Centre at Potsdamer Platz is more than your average theme park.

Descend into the cavernous underground space, and you’ll find yourself immersed in a world dedicated to the ubiquitous blocks. Various zones are themed on different aspects of the bricks – from a historical look at how LEGO is made through to the slightly less educational dragon rollercoaster, 4D cinema and lands dedicated to Pirates and Ninjago. Berlin gets the LEGO treatment in the Miniland, with some of the city’s sites recreated (out of LEGO, naturally) in just 50 square metres. The physical activity centre and Build and Test Centre will channel younger visitors’ excitement into something a little more productive – while there is a café to replenish and revive before making your way out via the LEGO shop. And all this from a block of plastic… such is the power of LEGO.
