The days are rapidly shortening and the dark winter is imminent, but there's reason for cheer as Berlin's opera houses open their gilded doors after the summer break. Berlin, a relatively tiny city with 3 million inhabitants, has an embarassment of riches with three opera houses.

Staatsoper on Unter de Linden specializes in ballet and Italian operas, including Rossini's Il barbiere di siviglia (Sep 18, 28, 19:30). The smaller, golden Komische Oper, just a hop, skip and a jump away from Minilofts, opens their season on September 20 at 20:00, with the premiere of Verdi's Rigoletto. The more modern Deutsche Oper, the pride of West Berlin, presents Wagner's Tannhäuser this month, if you're in the mood for something intense (watch out, it's four hours long).

Tickets at all three houses are as low as €13, so it's worth it to indluge in some high cultcha, if only for a taste of sumptuous luxury.
