There are many reasons to take a quick trip east and head to the Dong Xuan Centre. A cavernous complex formed from a series of hangars, the Dong Xuan Center, located in Lichtenberg is Berlin’s largest Asian Supermarket. But it’s also a treasure box of wholesale wares that range from the sublime to the incredibly plastic (a smell that will definitely waft past your nose whilst walking around), a place to buy some aromatic and soothing Pho – a clear and fragrant soup with beef and noodles – to nourish you in between all the wandering around.

The Dong Xuan Center is just as functional as it is to gawp at – with about a third of the city’s 12,000 or so Vietnamese population living in Lichtenberg, it’s also a place to sort out the administrative tasks of German life and where you can get the things the German supermarket brands are woefully short on. With Vietnamese the second largest minority in Berlin, the Dong Xuan Centre is not just about the plastic – it’s also for many, a way of life.

One tip – weekends can be a bit of a scrum, so if you are planning a more sedate visit, try the weekdays!
