In lazy summer, a trip out to one of Berlin's many lovely lakes is the perfect day trip. The lake Schlachtensee is smaller and more intimate than the nearby Wannsee, with wooded banks, grassy knolls, and clean waters; it's easily accessible by public transport. And it has Die Fischerhütte on its south shores, a wonderful restaurant and beer garden. Rent a boat, take a stroll around the lake or take a dip (or all three). Then soak up the afternoon sun on Fischerhütte's terrace, send the kids to the playground, and enjoy a foamy beer or cool glass of Riesling. (Warning: if you're planning to swim, at the other end of the lake there are plenty of naked folk sunbathing in true German style. Dive in!)
